Jivamukti Founders: Sharon Gannon and
Jivamukti Yoga is a path to enlightenment through compassion for all beings. It is grounded in five main tenets: Yogic scripture, Bhakti (devotion to the Divine spirit), Ahimsa (the practices of non-harming), Music, and Meditation. The practices of Jivamukti Yoga, which is a style of Hatha Yoga, include asana, pranayama, chanting, meditation, scripture study, satsang and others. The physical practice of asana is vigorous, intellectually stimulating and uplifting. The aim of the practices is the state of enlightenment, also called God realization, and the word "Jivamukti" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Jivanmuktih," which means "liberation while living." Thus, Jivamukti Yoga strives to provide the student with the means to attain eternal happiness in this lifetime.
